University of Iowa police say Jerome “Jerry” Lepperd, a 73-year-old man who went missing after the Iowa-Oregon football game at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday evening, has been found safe. Authorities confirmed Sunday that Mr. Lepperd was located in good condition and reunited with his family after an overnight search effort that drew widespread community concern.
Lepperd, who is unfamiliar with the Iowa City area and is known to become easily disoriented, became separated from his group shortly after 6 p.m. as thousands of fans exited the stadium. He did not have access to a vehicle, prompting fears that he may have wandered off on foot. University police, with help from local law enforcement and volunteers, began an extensive search that included patrols around the Hancher parking lot, nearby neighborhoods, and walking paths along the Iowa River.

At the time of his disappearance, Lepperd was described as 5’9” and 170 pounds, with blue eyes, light hair, and a bandage on his forehead from a recent surgery. He was last seen wearing a black rain jacket and pants, black tennis shoes, and possibly a dark blue stocking hat.
Authorities quickly issued a missing person alert through local media and social platforms, urging football fans and Iowa City residents to check their security cameras and report any sightings. The community’s swift response and the collaborative efforts of multiple agencies played a critical role in locating him safely.
The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety and Des Moines Police expressed gratitude to the public for their assistance and vigilance. What began as a deeply concerning situation ended with relief for Lepperd’s loved ones and a reminder of the power of community awareness and quick action.
